Preventing Tint Peeling
Congratulations on your new tints! While tinted lenses offer numerous benefits, it's crucial to address potential issues early on, with one of the most common being tint peeling shortly after installation. Understanding the causes and implementing immediate solutions will help ensure that your tinted lenses remain clear, durable, and visually appealing.
Causes of Immediate Tint Peeling:
Incomplete Adhesive Bonding:
- During the installation process, if the adhesive bonding between the tint film and the lens is incomplete or compromised, it can lead to immediate peeling.
Insufficient Drying Time:
- Adequate drying time is essential for the adhesive to bond effectively. Rushing the process or exposing the tinted lens to external factors before the adhesive is fully cured can result in peeling.
Poor Installation Procedure:
- Not squeegeeing properly and thoroughly can cause air bubbles to form which can contribute to peeling issues. Also, overstretching the film can cause overhangs or “fingers” can result in premature peeling.
Avoiding Tint Peeling:
Proper Drying Time:
- Allow 24 hours to 48 hours for the tints to dry and bond with the lens.
Avoiding Harsh Conditions:
- During the initial curing period, avoid exposing the tinted lenses to harsh conditions such as excessive heat, direct sunlight, or heavy rain. These factors can interfere with the adhesive bonding process.
Solutions for Immediate Tint Peeling:
Post-Installation Inspection:
- After the tinting process, carefully inspect the lenses 30 minutes to 1 hour for any signs of peeling. If you see signs of peeling, ensure that there are no contaminants and then apply more tack solution to the area and heat. Then press the film down with a clean microfiber towel for roughly 5 seconds. Repeat until film remains adhered.
