Windshield Protection Film Installation Guide
Simple Step-by-Step Instructions
Video and Written Instruction Below
Hi there! Thank you for getting your Windshield Protection Film. This guide will help you install the WPF to your vehicles windshield. Take your time, read slowly, and you’ll do great!
What You Need to Get Started
Tools Included With Precut Orders Only:
-
Squeegee
- Baby Shampoo
-
Slip Solution
- Microfiber Towel
Tools Recommended For Best Results:
-
Scrub Pad
-
Heat Gun
-
Optional: Clay Bar & Stainless Steel Razorblade (For removing heavy contaminates)
- Note: We always recommend using distilled water when creating your slip solution. Distilled water has no minerals and will not cause any damage to the windshield.
Slip Solution Mixing Guide (16 oz Bottle)
This solution helps you position the Windshield Protection Film before install.
Instructions:
- Lightly tilt your 2 oz bottle over your spray bottle.
-
Quickly flick or drip in about 2-3 small shakes worth of liquid.
-
Think of it like splashing in a few drops—not a steady stream
-
You're looking for just enough to form a small puddle the size of a quarter in the bottom of your 16 oz spray bottle.
-
- Fill the bottle with distilled water.
- Close and shake gently to mix.
Important Soap Information
Adding too much soap can make the film feel slimy and will be hard to secure and install.
This mix gives you the perfect balance of repositionability and adhesion. Only add more soap if you feel the film is not sliding around easy.
Set Up Your Work Area
-
We highly recommend working in an indoor dust controlled environment to prevent premature drying and prevent any contaminates during install.
-
Can work outdoors but with precautions
-
-
Work early in the morning or late afternoon — avoid peak sun
-
Work under shade — heat causes water to evaporate too fast
-
Choose a wind-free day — wind will blow dust under the film
-
Wet the ground around the vehicle — reduces airborne dust
-
Step 1: Prepping The Windshield
-
Remove or lift the wiper away from the windshield.
-
Spray your slip solution to the glass
-
Remove any contaminates with microfiber towel. You can use a light duty scrub pad.
-
If needed you can also use a clay bar. Just make sure the windshield does not have any already existing small cracks because if rub the clay on the crack it will fill in the crack and will cause damage to the film when installing
-
Optional: Can use a stainless steel blade for tough contaminates.
-
Note: If the windshield already has some type of ceramic coating you will need to remove it. Using a polish compound with a polishing pad or applicator and wipe it clean with isopropyl alcohol would be the most effective way.
-
-
Once you clean the entire windshield, use a clean microfiber towel and remove the dirty soapy water.
-
Once you remove the dirty soapy water. Reapply a generous amount of slip solution to get it ready for the install.
Installation Videos Below (Precut & Bulk Method):
WPF Installation Process
-
Getting To Know Your WPF: Unroll the WPF on a clean table, there should only be 2 layers to the precut/bulk film. The actual film facing towards you and the backing layer that protects the adhesive of the WPF.
-
For bulk installation measure the windshield and cut the film slightly larger and wider than the windshield. This allows more room for adjustments when doing the install.
-
-
You can peel, transfer and do the installation by yourself. You will just need to be more cautious and making sure the whole install comes out clean. We do recommend to have another person to help with the installation.
-
Before touching the adhesive side of the film it is important that your hands and fingertips are clean. Spray slip solution to the tips of your fingers in order to be able to touch the adhesive and not leave any fingerprint marks.
-
Slowly peel off the film from one edge and as you peel make sure you are continuously applying slip solution to the adhesive to keep the film wet.
-
Once you remove the film from the backing paper carefully transfer and apply the film to the windshield.
-
For bulk method make sure the entire windshield is being covered especially on the bottom of the windshield. You will have some excess material on the edges which is fine. That can be trimmed off afterwards. Stretching the film may be required to remove big fingers.
-
-
Make sure the windshield is not dry, if needed reapply more slip solution that way you can position the film correctly to the windshield.
-
For precut align the film on one edge first. Once aligned, apply slip solution to the entire top layer of the film.
-
Grab your squeegee and starting from the center of the film do overlapping strokes to push out all the solution from under the film.
-
Once the center has been squeegeed and secured you may now start to squeegee one side of the film.
-
Do overlapping strokes to make sure you remove all the solution in order to prevent any bubbles.
- Once you finish one side go ahead and start on the remaining side. Make sure the solution underneath the film has not dried up. If it is then carefully lift the film and apply slip solution.
-
Note: If the solution is dry and you try to align or stretch the film you can tear the adhesive which will damage the film.
-
-
Something to keep in mind windshield designs vary for all vehicles. Some windshields are more curved than others. Depending on your windshield you may need to stretch the WPF to the other edge in order to remove any fingers and to have more coverage.
-
Once you stretch and align the film to the edge, make sure to rewet the top side of the film to prevent the squeegee from dragging or scratching the film.
-
Hold the film in position with one hand and with your other use your squeegee to push out the solution from under the film to start securing the film to the windshield.
- Again do overlapping strokes to make sure you remove all the solution in order to prevent any bubbles.
Removing Fingers
-
You may encounter fingers coming from the edges of the film. The amount of fingers varies depending on the curvature of the vehicles windshield.
-
For bulk method trim off the excess material from the edges to help lay the fingers on the edges.
-
-
To remove the fingers you can apply slip solution to wet the surface of the film and using a heat gun to help shrink the fingers. If you do have bigger fingers it is recommended to break them down into smaller fingers in order to remove them more easier.
- Use the squeegee to tack down the fingers. You can apply pressure and hold the squeegee on top of the finger for a couple seconds to so the adhesive can hold to the windshield.
- Inspect the entire windshield to make sure you removed all of the bubbles and fingers before letting the film cure.
Aftercare Instructions
-
Avoid reapplying the windshield wipers to the windshield as that can cause some issues and not let the film cure properly. However, if it is necessary to put the wipers onto the windshield we recommend to apply them slowly. (Be advised: Below is an image of how the film would react if it is not fully cured and reapply the wipers too early to the windshield)
- For the film to cure, park the vehicle outside and let the sun hit the windshield. Leaving the vehicle in a garage or indoors is fine to but the curing process will take longer.
- After the install you may notice some moisture pockets which is completely normal. Allow for 2-3 weeks for the film to fully cure.
- Avoid washing or wetting the windshield for the first 2-3 days after the install.
- Be mindful before using your windshield wiper, make sure your wipers are clean and have no debris, branches, small pebbles etc. Those things can potentially scratch and damage the windshield film.
Optional For Long Term Care: Applying a ceramic coating can extend the longevity of the film. It will help by making it easier to clean after a ceramic coating has been applied. It will also help the wipers glide more easier when using them. Just make sure you buy/use a ceramic coating that is safe to use for WPF/TPU Films.
Want to Remove the Film Later?
No problem! Here's how:
-
Heat it first.
-
Use a heat gun or hair drying to warm up the film to help soften the adhesive. Caution: Do not overheat the glass.
-
Peel slowly.
-
Start at a corner and pull gently at an angle (not straight up).
-
Keep applying gentle heat just ahead of where you're peeling.
-
Clean leftover glue (If Any)
-
Spray area generously with warm soapy water and let it sit for 2-3 minutes.
-
Use a light duty scrub pad to rub off soften adhesive
-
For tough adhesive marks you can use adhesive remover like Goo Gone.
-
Final wipe.
-
Spray IPA to the windshield and wipe with a clean lint-free microfiber towel.
